OUR MISSION STATEMENT
MVS Christchurch is a registered charity and therefore totally community funded.
OUR MISSION FOR THE COMMUNITY is to serve them by developing a group of skilled maritime volunteers who will support the community and emergency services in estuary safety, urban flood rescue, environmental conservation and at local maritime events.
OUR MISSION FOR OUR VOLUNTEER MEMBERSHIP is to give anyone between the ages of 18-80 with little or no experience the opportunity to get out on the water safely.
WE OFFER TRAINING to our members through a shared knowledge scheme; whereby members who already have Maritime Qualifications such as RYA Yacht masters, Day Skipper etc share their knowledge and experience by conducting classroom exercises and practical boat instruction to other members who have very little or no experience. This ensures that our running cost remain very low and so too our membership fees. The MVS therefore remains extremely accessible and beneficial to those of limited funds i.e. pensioners or unemployed persons. Through our unique structure we are able to give our members
the opportunity to 'Get out on the Water' and be safe.
OUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE
a. Mud and Flood Response team for Christchurch Harbour involved with the Council, the Police, the Fire Service and the Environment agency in contingency plans for such an emergency event for local residents.
b. Environmental issues such as the establishment of otters in Christchurch Harbour, monitoring bird life and pollution.
c. Bridging a gap between the public and the Emergency Services; To provide assistance to the local Marine Community with such things as simple towing if they run aground or run out of fuel - tasks that are currently undertaken by the Established Emergency Services that over burden their already stretched resources.
