The Maritime Volunteer Service is a recognised national maritime training organisation and a UK registered charity with more than 25 units around the country providing training to nationally and internationally recognised standards, serving local communities especially in times of need or emergency and taking part in resilience exercises ashore and afloat.

What We Do
The MVS educates members in all aspects of maritime and communication skills and knowledge. Helps local organisations and events with skilled support, stimulates interest in maritime affairs and assists members to achieve through training and helpin their local community.

Our Objectives
Education: To advance the education and training of the members of the charity and the general public in all aspects of maritime ad communication skills and knowledge.

Preservation: The protection and preservation of life and property primarily, but not exclusively, within the maritime environment.

Help: To help at maritime events around the country.

Stimulate: To stimulate the interest from all walks of life in maritime affairs.

Exciting: To be interesting and useful spare time activity that is fun and exciting.

We strive to achieve
We maintain a body of skilled volunteers to:
Support national and local government departments and agencies or support harbour, port, national and local authorities on request.

Support events on land and sea as required by the organisers to assist in the safety and security of the event participants and of the general public in attendance or to provide communication and operational support.

Promote ans support a better understanding of the marine environment.

To provide a central and local training provision to which our members and other volunteers can access.

Stimulate the interest of young people in maritime affairs and the wate

Skills Developed Through Practical Experience

If you are new to power boating our practical introduction will get you started and prepare you for your first RYA training course and qualification. If you already have power boat experience we'll give you time on the water to polish your existing skills and give you the opportunity to take them to the next level. 

Experience you will gain includes;

  • Charts, chart symbols, buoyage systems, tides and tidal streams
  • Piloting and passage planning
  • Assistance to achieve RYA Power Boat Level II
  • Application of local byelaws.
  • Assistance to achieve RYA VHF Radio
  • GPS Use and Limitations
  • Advice about our coastal waters
  • Practical boat familiarization
  • Rules of the Road
  • Familiarisation with local harbour and rivers
