Skills Developed Through Practical Experience

If you are new to power boating our practical introduction will get you started and prepare you for your first RYA training course and qualification. If you already have power boat experience we'll give you time on the water to polish your existing skills and give you the opportunity to take them to the next level. 

Experience you will gain includes;

  • Charts, chart symbols, buoyage systems, tides and tidal streams
  • Piloting and passage planning
  • RYA Power Boat Level II
  • Application of local byelaws,  distress signals, mayday & hand boat signals.
  • RYA VHF Radio
  • Fire Precautions
  • Introduction to Geographic Information System
  • GPS Use and Limitations
  • Advice about our coastal waters
  • Practical boat familiarization
  • Rules of the Road


Simulation Based Skill Development 

Our simulation facility develops your handling and crew management skills to help you execute successful passages and to recover from situations that may  develop when things don't go to plan. 

Simulation time includes;

    • Basic power boat handling
    • Familiarization with local harbours (by both day and night)
    • Execution of passage & pilotage plans
    • Timed legs to EP on heading and speed
    • Leading lines
    • Clearing lines
    • Transits
    • Buoyage (and potential pitfalls of buoy hopping)
    • Approach at night using navigation lights (cardinals, laterals, sectored)
    • Approach in fog using depth contours
    • Collision risk assessment and avoidance
    • Passages with tidal streams
